Air protection at Grana

On February 12, 2020, a meeting took place with representatives of The Office of the City and Commune of Skawina, the Municipal Council, the Scientific Council attached to the Municipal Council, and representatives of the Provincial Environmental Protection Inspectorate and the District Starosty. The meeting aimed at presenting the activities undertaken by Grana in the field of reducing the emissions to air.

Jacek Hyla, Grana sp. z o.o. Board Member for Production presented and discussed the Grana environmental statement and the air protection investments made over the last 10 years, with the value of nearly PLN 5.5 million. The performance of the new devices burning exhaust gases in the roasting furnaces were also presented. It was emphasised that the equipment had reduced VOC emissions by more than 90%. Grana plans further investments and will continue to work with the Energy Conservation and Air Protection Institute at the Main Mining Institute for measurements and testing of dust and gas emissions. The results obtained will be used to determine further work on reducing emissions.

In 2020, the Company will carry out the following activities:

  • The construction of a new bag filter on the spray dryer no. 2 (construction year 1975); the device weighs approximately 30 tonnes and its dimensions are 2.8 x 10.2 x 8.4 m. The cost of the investment is approx. PLN 3.4 million. After the bag filter is installed, the total dust concentration in the purified air will be less than 5 mg/Nm3. The completion of the investment and launch of the filter is planned by December 31, 2020 at the latest. The same filter type was installed in 2012 on the spray dryer no. 3. The dust emissions measured in December 2019 on the spray dryer no. 3 indicates even lower dust emissions than the ones assumed, i.e. a concentration of 1,15 mg/Nm3; emissions of 0,0466 kg/h.
  • Decommissioning of the Rototerm furnace and dismantling of the exhaust gas afterburner. These two emitters are shut down and will be dismantled by March 31, 2020. Thus, the number of emitters in Grana will be reduced from 24 to 22.
